Wrecking the diet with healthy snacks

Just as I’m starting to see a slight change in body shape as a result of Intermittent Fasting and following a keto (low carb) diet, some lovely PRs have sent me snacks to try in readiness for Healthy Eating Week which kicks off on June 10.

Now when you’ve been fasting and then feasting on mainly meat and vegetables for a few weeks (OK, there was the odd glass of white wine in there), snacks arriving on your doorstep feels like a serious case of diet sabotage.

Of course, I could have resisted, but in the interests of spreading the healthy eating word, I’ve had to sacrifice myself and take one or two for the team. Goodbye ketosis, hello Trek and Bells & Whistles.

Trek is a tasty new range of natural protein nut bars, which I can get away with on a low-carb diet provided I rein in the carbs elsewhere. Each 40g bar contains: 10g of plant-based protein, less than 5g of sugar and the all-important high fibre which lessens the carb load.

There are four delicious vegan and gluten-free flavours made with natural ingredients to keep you going. I tried the Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt and was about to snaffle the Coconut and Raspberry, but it had already been inhaled by my daughter.

Crammed with roasted peanuts for slow-release of omega 6 and protein to help you get the best out of your day, Trek is light enough not to spoil your meal, but packed with the goodies to keep you feeling full for longer, always a bonus when you’re trying to drop a few pounds.

Find them at major retailers including Wholefoods, Ocado and Asda, 99p each or £2.50 for a pack of three. Great for adding to kids’ lunchboxes too.

So far so good, no damage done to the diet. And that should have been the case when I came to try the all-singing and dancing new vegan cake slices, Bells & Whistles

Available in three delicious flavours – Berry & Cashew, Nut Truffle and Ginger & Apricot – Bells & Whistles will start to hit the shelves at Sainsbury’s starting from Thursday, June 9.

Each variety bursts with layer upon layer of flavour as a sumptuous baked base is flooded with luxurious chocolate ganache then generously topped with dark chocolate or a vegan white chocolate that contains no milk and generously sprinkled with either tangy berries, roasted hazelnuts or chopped pistachio.

Gluten, wheat and milk-free, Bells & Whistles’ vegan cake slices are all under 120 calories and around 6 carbs per slice, so that’s all great news, EXCEPT there are four slices in a pack and I would DEFY ANYONE to stop at one. It’s physically impossible and I don’t even have a sweet tooth.

They’re one of the most delicious snacky, cakey things I’ve ever tried, like a mini dessert in a posh restaurant.
