Karen Campbell-Williams, is Head of Tax at Grant Thornton UK LLP. Born in Glasgow and now living in the north of England, she is a wife, mum and grandma. She has a big family and lots of hobbies which keep her busy when she’s not working.
1. What has been your Best Life Project to date?
It is undoubtedly and unashamedly my family. Tony and I have been married for just over five years and between us we have five children aged 16 to 30 and two adorable grandchildren both born in 2019.
2. The unknown … what challenges did you have to overcome?
Throughout my education and early years of working I really lacked confidence. I was the first in my immediate family to go to university and it took me a long time to develop self-confidence in the world of work. Even now I still suffer from Imposter Syndrome at times.
3. In hindsight…..what would you do differently?
Talk more about how I was feeling and surround myself with advocates and positive influences whose opinions I respect. It is very easy to indulge in negative self-talk, but I have learned that you can balance that with an external perspective and by coaching yourself.
4. Next steps?
As life flashes past so quickly, focus must be on living life to the full and achieving balance. This year has been hard due to Lockdown restrictions so I am longing for a time when we can see family and travel more freely.
5. What lifestyle changes has Lockdown made you consider?
A home in the country is now on my wish list for when my youngest has finished school and flown the nest. Lockdown has demonstrated that I can work effectively from home on a regular basis so that opens up all sort of possibilities.
6. Kissing frogs …. is there an unexpected person who has helped you and, if so, how did they do it?
Not a particular person I can think of, but I guess I would say that I have seen behaviours and attitudes over the years which have helped me see what I don’t want to be. Fairness is really important to me and so when I see unfairness it spurs me into action.
7. My Inspiration ….who or what inspires you?
Anyone who has a truly positive outlook and uses their power or influence to help other people and to effect positive change in the world. Those who live life with authenticity and integrity and who have overcome adversity are inspirational.
8. How do you relax or do you struggle to relax?
We love our holidays and seeing the world, so regular breaks to spend time with family and recharge batteries are hugely important. Hobbies include exercise, dancing, singing, reading, watching films, concerts and the theatre. Lockdown has made a lot of this more difficult but I’m back dancing now which is a great stress reliever.
9. Guilty secret pleasure?
Trash TV – Don’t Tell the Bride, Dress to Impress, Four in a Bed – you get the gist! Also love Coronation Street.
10.Words of wisdom
Don’t beat yourself up about things that don’t really matter – if it won’t matter in five weeks or five years then park it and move on.
You can’t pour from an empty teapot, so make sure you spend time on your own wellbeing too.
