Jacq’s Journal: For Fizz Sake! All dressed up and nowhere to go

Earlier this week we, at The Best Life Project towers, attended a virtual awards ceremony organised by the People’s Choice Drinks Awards as sponsors of the Sparkling Wine – Rest of the World category.

The anticipation started on Saturday when a bottle of Kylie (yes, THE Kylie) Fizz was delivered to be chilled for Monday. The packaging was stunning, and I thought, ‘Wow! This is clearly going to be a classy affair’.

Whilst I managed to resist temptation, my co-founder Diane’s bottle was emptied at the first opportunity forcing her to go out and buy a cheap prosecco to pour into the empty bottle and pretend it was Kylie’s finest for the camera. I suspect this is not the first time she has done this.

Anyone who knows Diane or read her latest Di’s Diary knows that she is always stylish, whether it’s a trip to Aldi or emptying the bins. In other words, she makes the effort. My efforts, on the other hand, were exposed during the judging Zoom call for the Inspiring Women Awards last week.

Everyone was excitedly sharing the efforts they had made for the call – smart outfits, make-up, even jewellery. I realised my contribution of ‘I’ve cleaned my teeth’ was just not cutting it. So when the invitation to the drinks awards came, I thought I should up my game and follow their lead, especially if I’m going to ‘share the stage’ with Diane.

Diane had already checked up on me with a ‘you are getting changed, aren’t you?’ message earlier in the day and with an hour to go the transformation started. Showered, hair washed (and dyed) posh frock and jewellery selected. Next was the make-up, which took a while as I had forgotten which brush was for what and where does the bronzer go? I topped all this off with my Christmas YSL perfume and lipstick – you know, the special occasion stuff. No one could accuse me of not trying. I also pondered painting my nails, but ran out of time.

With a minute to go before the ceremony started, I opened the fizz and sat there in my best ‘Mr DeMille, I’m ready for my close up’ pose. Lights, camera, action! and the awards began …

NOOOOOO, it was all pre-recorded. After all that effort, only the pooch was going to see me, and she didn’t seem that interested.

Oh well, looking on the bright side, at least I now know one dress still fits, where the bronzer goes, and I still have that bottle of Kylie’s organic cava all to myself. Silver linings, readers, silver linings.
