Footie kids: Why the Euros are a costly time for Mum and Dad

The staggering cost of kids’ football kits has been revealed, with parents expected to stump up eye-watering sums of money for young fans.

Youngsters hoping to replicate their heroes by draping themselves head-to-toe in like-for-like matchday apparel can expect their loved ones to fork out as much as £271 a time..

Research by olbg.com totted up the cost of an official replica junior shirt (with name printing), shorts, socks, shin guards, official junior ball and current boot of choice for the leading lights of world football – many of which are starring in this summer’s UEFA European Championships.

And it’s those looking to show their support for Portugal and one of the greatest players of all time – Cristiano Ronaldo – who must shell out a mammoth £271 – whereas Egypt’s Mo Salah sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, representing £130 in outlay for all the gear.

CR7’s boots alone (Nike Mercurial Superfly Elite) would set you back £120 for a junior pair of football cleats, comfortably ahead of Luka Modric (£105, Nike Mercurial Vapor Elite – Crimson) – the only other player to surpass the £100-mark on boots.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson’s matchday look is the second priciest, as the Tartan Army’s home strip coupled with a junior pair of Nike Phantom GT Elite boots rack up a bill of £230.92 for parents north of the border.

The supremely talented trio of Kylian Mbappe (£216.90) and Kevin de Bruyne (£207.90) and Luka Modric (£203.73) make up the pricest five footballers, while England’s Harry Kane is down in ninth, donning the equivalent of £187-worth of junior clobber.

As an interesting aside, Scotland and Wales home shirts with Robertson and Bale printed on the back respectively are the most expensive of all the big names at this summer’s Euros – both cost £87 for an adult and £72 for a junior. That puts the duo ahead of the likes of Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Kevin de Bruyne, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

When it comes to adult apparel, Mbappe leads the way with £415.95 of gear on show every time he takes to the field. The 22-year-old’s Nike Mercurial Superfly Pro boots with Impulse Pack are one of six players to have footwear that costs in excess of £200.

At the opposite end of the scale, Poland’s Robert Lewandowski (£279.90) and Salah (£285) are the only two players to come in under £300, while Messi’s Adidas X50 Flow .1 FG boots, in metalic-black-intense orange, are a snip at £258.14!
