Fashion Agony Aunt: The mini is back, am I too old to wear one at 40?

Q. Now that we might at last be allowed to go somewhere other than from kitchen to living room I want to add a few fashion pieces to my wardrobe. But I’m not sure what they should be. I hear the mini is back but I’m over 40. Am I too old to wear one?

A: If any time was right for a mini revival it’s now. After all, we’re all craving that carefree, youthful vibe that epitomised the heyday of the short skirt.

I’m not saying it’s for everyone though. I mean I’ve never been to Butlins but if I had I’d have probably been a shoo-in as winner for the Miss Knobbly Knees competition. Of course, I wore short skirts when I was younger but it wasn’t a good look so I won’t be hiking up the length of my dresses, even if I’m the only one on the planet traipsing around in a midi.

My point is, it’s not about your age, it’s all about whether you would feel good in something over the knee. I’m not saying ‘look’ good in one because I’m a great believer in whatever makes you happy when you wear it, is worth every penny.

Plus, summer is the perfect time to indulge your mini fantasy. Somehow a short, flippy skirt and a pair of trainers looks free and fun in summer when days are bright and you want to get maximum exposure to the sun.

Just for the record, there are ways to wear a mini length to ensure you don’t look like you’re ‘strutting your stuff on the street’ like Lady Marmalade. One is the right footwear. Think funky wedges with tanned legs, a flat ankle boot, high tops and anything by Valentino or Jimmy Choo.

Another is, if you’re over 40, it’s probably best not to do the short skirt revealing top combo, unless you’re on the beach or in a dark nightclub. A tailored mini look works but add a cool sandal or ankle boot to stop it from looking too much like office wear.

On-trend styles to look out for are florals and anything black. And if, like me, you don’t fancy a mini skirt but want to look fresh take a look at this shorts suit from Cos. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with its crisp, contemporary vibe. Not strictly a mini, but it does fall into the category of a fashion-forward outfit that will shake up your wardrobe for a bright new future.
