Fashion Agony Aunt: Seven ways to get sartorially inspired this Christmas

I have no idea what to wear this Christmas. In normal times I’d have bought myself at least one new party dress, as well as something to wear over the Christmas period. But although this year, because of Covid, it’s going to be a much more paired down occasion, I’d still like to buy something new. I just need inspiration.

Fashion Agony Aunt Janet Reeder, says: “Yeah. What a bore 2020 has turned out to be. Honestly, normally Christmas is the perfect opportunity to go shopping for something drop dead gorgeous to wear but now because of the dreaded Covid normal rules do not apply. Fear not though because sartorial inspiration is out there and here’s where to get it…

Seven ways to get sartorially inspired this festive season!

  1. Wham’s Last Christmas video

Who wouldn’t want to celebrate Christmas with Wham and friends in a Swiss mountain resort or wherever it is they’re holed up in this video. There’s so much to enjoy. George Michael’s Lady Diana impression at the dinner table when he peers coyly from under his fringe at Andrew Ridgley who’s not only dating George’s girlfriend from ‘last Christmas’  but wearing the brooch George gave her when they were an item (there again it is a piece of jewellery that looks like he just stole from his nan’s jewellery box). There are snowball fights, drinks by the fire and, of course, the clothes everyone wears. Big jumpers, scarves, oversized coats, chunky boots. The look is so now!

  • Cameron Diaz in The Holiday

In which the actor rocks a winter white polo neck tight jeans and impractical heeled footwear. An effortless look that takes you from making a snowman in the garden to  drinking mulled wine by the fireside.

  • Mariah Carey’s All I want For Christmas Is You video

Mariah isn’t holding back here. She’s gone the full Mrs Claus in a mini skater dress with white fur trim. Why is this the perfect look for Christmas Day? It’s fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously but sexy enough to solicit kisses under the mistletoe. You can adapt Mariah’s frankly tarty take on Santa with a red dress or jumper accessories with a white faux fur collar.

The Princess Diana wooly jumper, £250
  • Princess Diana at Christmas

The People’s Princess was totes on the Crimbo jumper zeitgeist long before anyone else. Her woolly sheep sweater has been relaunched on the back of the release of The Crown on Netflix and is already a sell out at £250 a pop (queue here www.rowingblazers.com ).  It’s so iconic that Gucci did a copy as worn by Harry Styles, so you could buy it for your boyfriend and wear it yourself. The makers Rowing Blazers also do fabulous Diana blazers that would be perfect attire for that Christmas country house weekend.

Goldie Hawn loves a gold boot. Chie Mihara Gold boots, £311 www.chiemihara.com
  • Goldie Hawn promoting The Christmas Chronicles 2

Ms Hawn and partner Kurt Russell are making onscreen magic happen in Netflix’s Christmas Chronicles 2 this festive season. But take a look at what Goldie was wearing when she and her partner were on the promotional trail. A black puffa jacket, black jeans and gold stiletto heeled boots. Yes at 74 she can still wear a heel without ‘having a fall’. Anyway. It’s a great look.

  • Will Ferrell in Elf

Not an obvious choice but we’re talking inspiration here. It doesn’t mean doing an elfish impersonation. Will Ferrell’s outfit is a green all-in-one but what makes it great fashion inspo is the au courant Peter Pan collar. So now and perfect for visiting elder relatives or appearing in the choir on Songs of Praise.

  • The telly

From Normal People to The Queen’s Gambit, TV has been an amazing source of fashion inspiration this year.  It proves that well, anything goes. So whether you want to vamp it up, or rock a preppy vintage look go for it!
