Life expectancy for the UK is around 79.3 years for males and 82.9 for females. In 1900 it was 47 for a man and 50 for a woman, so we’re definitely on the up.
But even though we’re living longer, we’re feeling the effects of ageing — whether this is physically, mentally, or emotionally, it’s no secret that we go through changes.
Our appearance is at the mercy of many forces when we age, such as our lifestyles, hormone changes, or harsh weather. Even our strength deteriorates with a reduction of vitamin D3, putting more strain on our joints and muscles.
We don’t expect to look like we did in our 20s, but many of us wonder if we have a normal number of wrinkles for our age, or if our hair is turning grey too soon.
When we age, our cells die to make room for new ones — a normal part of the body’s functioning. When we get older however, old cells die because they can only divide a limited number of times or die from harm caused by sunlight, radiation, and free radicals, for example.
In simple terms, free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage our cells. These atoms essentially have missing electrons which causes them to search for other atoms that have these electrons to bind with to become stable.
